Trekking Peak Climbing

Overview

Ramdung Peak climbing (5925m) is situated south of the Tashilabtsa pass, which borders Khumbu and the immense Rolwaling valley. Crossing the pass into the remote valley of Rolwaling takes you to the rarely climbed peak of Ramdung. Ramdung, also called Ramdung Go, is one of a cluster of peaks around the Yalung-La (5,310m/17,421ft), a pass giving access to the upper Rolwaling from the south, via the Khare Khola. The peaks in the area were first explored by Scottish Himalayan expedition, led by Bill Murray in 1952, when three of the peaks near the pass, Yalung-Ri (5,630m/18,471ft), Chhugyima Go (6,259m/20,534ft), and Ramdung were climbed. In 1955 the peak had its second ascent by members of the Merseyside expedition. Since then Ramdung has been climbed numerous times is an ideal summit for groups wanting to trek and climb in the still little visited Rolwaling Himal area. Although the mountain, by it normal route of ascent, is straightforward, its virtues lie in its magnificent position and splendid summit panorama that ranges from Langtang to Everest and provides a splendid view of Gauri Shankar and Menlungtse.

The journey begins with a drive down to Dolakha, which lies on the Arniko highway that leads on to Tibet. The trek passes through pristine alpine forest consisting of pine and colorful Rhododendron. Along the route lie typical Nepali villages surrounded by farmland and lush green pastures. Further up you come across Sherpa villages with spectacular backgrounds like the Gauri Shanker Mountain rising like a colossus.

In the Rolwaling region, you step into the last Sherpa village called Beding. The trek leads further on to your destination, the Ramdung peak. This is a remote peak and though not technically difficult to climb, the altitude may cause problems. Your success on the peak is crowned with a sweeping view of the Everest, Melungtse, Gauri Shanker and a host of other towering Himalayan peaks.

The adventure is not over with the ascent of the peak as a high mountain pass lies on your path on the return journey. Tashi Laptsa Pass (5,755m) has to be crossed and takes a minimum of two days depending on weather conditions. The next region you enter after the crossing of the pass is the Khumbu, which can be called Sherpa land. It is also the Everest region with many high mountains and accomplished Sherpas residing here. The trek passes through the Thame village and arrives at the famous Namche Bazaar. From here, a day's walk through beautiful scenery brings you to the Lukla airport from where you fly back to Kathmandu.
